Gold Fields - Workplace

The new workplace for Gold Fields was designed as a physicalexpression of the company’s evolving culture - centred around collaboration, care, accountability, and simplicity.

Transforming a previously cellular office into a modernopen-plan environment, the 3000sqm Sandton headquarters was developed toencourage seamless cross-functional interaction, flexibility, and connectionacross teams.

Inspired by the concept of “Gold Fields House,” the designaimed to create more than just an office, but a unified workplace rooted inmining heritage, innovation, and inclusivity. The space combines a contemporaryaesthetic with thoughtful attention to sustainability, comfort, and thewellbeing of the people who use it.

The design for Gold Fields was driven by the concept of modernluxury—creating a timeless, sophisticated workplace that reflects thecompany's evolution, supports new ways of working, and provides an elevatedemployee experience.

To encourage greater flexibility and wellbeing, allworkstations were specified as height-adjustable desks, while traditionalcorporate furniture was complemented with hospitality-inspired soft seating tocreate more comfortable, welcoming, and collaborative environments.

A curated art strategy was integrated throughout theworkplace, with carefully selected objects and installations creating momentsof interest, storytelling, and connection to the Gold Fields brand.Sustainability was embedded into the design approach through the sourcing oflocally manufactured furniture, energy-efficient DALI-controlled lightingsystems, and new LED ceiling lighting to improve both performance andenvironmental impact.

Material selections balanced durability with refinement, creating a contemporary workplace aesthetic that feels both premium andenduring. Wallpapers and feature finishes drew inspiration from miningheritage, referencing the textures, layers, and natural formations of stone androck to create a subtle yet meaningful connection to Gold Fields' identity andlegacy.

Delivered as a phased design-and-build projectwithin a fully operational environment, the project required meticulousplanning to maintain business continuity while meeting tight timelines andoperational requirements. Through strategic collaboration, detailedcoordination, and a strong focus on design excellence, the result is afuture-focused workplace that reflects Gold Fields’ vision for the next chapterof its business.
