From colour and material choices, to architectural forms, furniture edging and local art, design details were informed and cohesively combined to tell the story of the Blue Marlin
The Blue Marlin restaurant at Beachcomber Paradis in Mauritius has a rich heritage layered with stories and authentic associations. The name was originally derived from the memorable event of catching a Blue Marlin fish at the beach resort’s port. However, this story had lost its resonance with guests and staff, resulting in an open space used for al carte dining that could be found at any other resort. Along with the client we saw an opportunity to not only revive its relevance, but to use it as a story-telling device to create a unique brand narrative for the restaurant.
Leaning into the narrative we brought the Blue Marlin fish’s characteristics to life through design. The iconic fish is often known as an aggressive hunter that lives in solitude. This juxtaposition was brought to life through materiality and art installations. Noteworthy details that align with the narrative include the colour palette, the contrast of textures, the smooth timber edges on all cabinetry, the scale-like forms of the tiles, arches and the art installations.
All these details, from colour and material choices, to architectural forms, furniture edging and local art were informed and cohesively combined to tell the story of the Blue Marlin and create a unique dining experience that is immersive from the moment one steps through its bespoke front doors.
Apart from connotations made from the fish, the place and its culturally rich heritage heavily impacted the design. The original building had the typical shingle roof structure of Mauritian architecture. We wanted to keep this architectural element and enhance its beauty by designing the extension of the restaurant with the same shingle detailing. The new roof is more inviting due to the lifted eaves of the existing roof and created a more open space filled with natural light whilst not obscuring the oceanic views. Local artists and Mauritian craftmans brought an authenticity and locality to the bespoke features.
The narrative of the Blue Marlin restaurant is crafted rather than themed, through careful consideration of material choices and design detailing creating a unique, immersive dining experience for the guest and reinvigorating the cultural significance of the place.
