Groblersdal Mall Upgrade. Making the mall feel “more memorable and more human”.
Groblersdal Mall is a key convenience destination in the Sekhukhune District, located about 30km from Loskop Dam and well positioned between main arterial routes serving surrounding reserves and tourist enclaves.
Our design process started by isolating what was holding the experience back: shoppers were moving through a space that felt generic and visually noisy, with low-contrast navigation and tenant signage that was unguided, creating clutter that detracted from the architecture. The intent was to keep the mall’s functional strengths intact (clear, simple navigation), but elevate identity, comfort, and legibility so the building felt distinctly “Groblersdal.”
We anchored the refresh in a place-based brand idea: “Rooted in Groblersdal, Growing Together” grounded in local culture and agricultural pride, with a warm, welcoming character aimed at community and family. The key architectural move was the creation of a central “hospitality zone” by integrating landscape into the arrival sequence: landscape bleeding under the covered portal and paved finishes extending into planted areas to soften the parking-to-mall threshold and improve the outdoor experience.
Our client performance review, notes exceptional outcomes and set Groblersdal as the “Gold Standard” asset for Twin City Developers:
· The centre grew from 35,000m² to 37,000m² (6% uplift in GLA)
· December 2026 turnover increased by 14% versus December 2025
· Social engagement that “more than doubled,” positioning Groblersdal as a “gold standard” asset.
